Finding Purpose Through the Needle
TCWM: What first inspired your journey into sewing and modest fashion?
Nola J.: I initially got into sewing simply to develop a homemaking skill after my second son was
born in 2018. At that time, I could barely sew a button, let alone fix a zipper or hem a
pair of pants. But after my baptism in 2017, I developed a deep desire to model my life
after the Proverbs 31 woman and to follow the lead of Wisdom.
The Most High placed a zeal and passion for sewing in my heart that quickly grew into
making garments and doing alterations for friends and family. Still, the greater burden
was always internal—transforming myself into a woman with a mind and heart after Christ.
I often asked myself, If He came down and saw me right now, would I be
shameful in His sight by my attire?
My husband has been a tremendous guide and encouragement in this journey. He has
helped shape my perspective on creating clothing that is modest while also challenging
cultural ideas of beauty. With the help of the Holy Spirit, my understanding of what is
truly beautiful—especially for myself—began to change.
Defining Modesty Biblically
TCWM: How do you define modesty from a biblical perspective?
Nola J.: This is one of my favorite topics. When I was launching the line, I spent countless days
discussing modesty with my favorite confidant, Zimrah Qol. We even tried to come up
with a tagline—though we never landed on one!
What I’ve come to understand is that modesty isn’t primarily about outward appearance.
It’s about inward submission to Christ. When your mind and heart are fully submitted to
Him, you no longer feel compelled to conform to the world’s standards of appearance.
In essence, modesty is the outward reflection of what already lives within you.
What you wear may change based on your growth in the Word, the occasion, or your
circumstances—but the heart posture remains the same. You will naturally choose to be
appropriately covered because your goal isn’t to draw attention to yourself, but to glorify
God in all things (Colossians 3:17; 1 Corinthians 10:31).
Scriptures such as 1 Timothy 2:9–10, 1 Peter 3:3–4, Galatians 5:22–26, and Philippians
4:5 all point us back to the same truth: true modesty reflects a godly heart through
humility, self-control, and Christlike character—not rigid clothing rules.
Freedom, Beauty, and Scripture
TCWM: How does Scripture shape your understanding of beauty and freedom in Christ?
Nola J.: My view of modesty always begins with the inner person and our walk with Christ. A
close friend and fashion icon I admire, Natazayab, once reminded me of Scriptures that
expanded my understanding of freedom in Christ.
Exodus 35:25–28 describes skilled women bringing beautifully crafted fabrics—blue,
purple, scarlet, and fine linen—for the Tabernacle, contributing directly to the dwelling
place of the Most High. Song of Solomon 3:10 also speaks of beauty and adornment,
describing silver posts, gold backing, and purple fabric lovingly crafted by the daughters
of Jerusalem.
These passages show us that beauty and craftsmanship were never excluded from
holiness—they were offered unto God.
Cultural Inspiration & Design Philosophy
TCWM: What influences your design process at Pretty Modest Boutique?
Nola J.: I’m often inspired by traditional African, Indian, and Asian cultures—places where
modesty, femininity, and moral dress codes have long been preserved. Many people
don’t realize that our ancestors were the forerunners of this type of fashion, and I see
my work as a way of restoring that legacy.
I incorporate feminine aesthetics—gently defining the waistline and suggesting flattering
necklines—while maintaining modesty. Many of these designs are especially popular for
feast days.
I also offer custom work. Clients often bring inspiration photos, and we collaborate on
how to adapt those ideas into something modest and aligned with their convictions.
Beauty That Speaks for Itself
TCWM: How do you respond to critics of modest fashion?
Nola J.: Honestly, my sisters answer that question themselves. When my models post photos orwe do fashion shoots, their inward beauty shines so clearly that even skeptics can’t
deny how stunning the final looks are.
Modest makeup and ornate wrapped hairstyles further enhance the aesthetic. Seeing
truly is believing.
Advice for Women Beginning Their Modesty Journey
TCWM: What practical advice would you give to women newly convicted about
modesty?
Nola J.: Learn how to layer clothing. You don’t need to throw everything away. Many Christian
modesty influencers on Instagram show how to layer dresses, tops, leggings, belts, and
scarves to create intentional looks.
Start small. Not everyone can afford to overhaul their wardrobe overnight. Take steps
with intention and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you—even in areas like hairstyling.
Everything doesn’t have to happen at once.
Personal Style & Creative Expression
TCWM: How do you help women express individuality while dressing modestly?
Nola J.: I love when sisters come with their own ideas—some sketch designs, others bring
photos. We always begin with a consultation to discuss the purpose and occasion.
Accessories are key: head wraps, earrings, belts, bracelets, and modest makeup help
personalize each look. I encourage women to mix and match pieces they already own.
My designs are enhancements—not replacements.
We don’t want to look like the world. We want to stand out—but in a good way.
Modesty, Identity, and Womanhood
TCWM:How has modesty shaped your identity as a woman?
Nola J.: Dressing modestly connects me to our foremothers. I think about Sarah and the
Proverbs 31 woman—women who were confident in who they belonged to.
They dressed with the Most High in mind, caring more about His view than anyone
else’s. Modesty keeps me grounded in my roles as a wife, mother, sister, friend, and
auntie, all working together for the Kingdom.
Teaching the Next Generation
TCWM: Do you see your work as a form of discipleship?
Nola J.: Absolutely. I see myself as both a teacher and an influencer. The younger generation
learns by what they see, so I want to provide visible examples of modesty.
When I started, there was so much confusion about what modesty even looked like. I
want to make it easier by modeling it and sharing designs they can aspire to—or even
recreate. In the future, I would love to host sewing classes, if it’s the Most High’s will.

TCWM: What is your final encouragement to women?
Nola J.: Life is too short to live for other people—we live for the Most High. Stay in the Word and
let it shape you. Work on the inner woman first, cultivating the fruits of the Spirit.

Tone: The BALM Oil. Use dropper to apply oil to clean skin and massage in.
This oil aids in toning complexion while hydrating, calming and fighting bacteria on skin.

Moisturize: The BALM.
ALWAYS apply on clean skin and massage in.
Each ingredient is very beneficial for your face & body to help fade dark spots, moisturize, and tone the skin.

Hydrate Undereye: The BALM Eye Cream.
Apply cream with ring finger it has the lightest touch! Best to use on clean skin.
Eye cream is a heavier cream designed to be used at night.
The undereye skin is very delicate and tends to dry out fast, especially overnight.
This eye cream keeps under eyes hydrated, which helps prevents wrinkles, tired eyes, dark circles, while keeping the under eyes bright and youthful!
It can be used in the day as well but ideally for night time.

The BALM Lip Treatment.
This lip treatment is designed to use at night but can be used in the day as well.
It gently exfoliates lips, and leaves them hydrated, soft and moisturized!
